WHAT IS A VALVE?

A valve is made by assembling several mechanical parts, the most important of which are the body, the gasket (the combination of replaceable wet parts), the stem, the cover and a drive mechanism.
Valves with small-bore sizes (generally 2 inches) or that require high resistance to pressure and temperature they are made with forged steel bodies; commercial valves over 2 inches in diameter have cast body materials.

CONTROL VALVES INSTALLATION
Continually expand the discharge steam line piping by at least one pipe diameter. Extending the discharge piping by at least two or three pipe diameters is not uncommon. Note that expanding the tubing reduces valve outlet velocities, thereby extending valve life. The valve manufacturer will supply the appropriate pipe size after the control valve. The pipe size should match the heat transfer inlet connection. Any heat transfer should be at least ten pipe diameters away from the steam control valve. In pressure-reducing applications, at least 20 horizontal pipe diameters should be left before changing flow direction.
The control valve must permanently be installed in a horizontal vapor line, never vertically.
Proper valve selection is more important under low flow operating conditions than under assumed high flow operating conditions.
Bypass valves must be used in the installation of the control valve. The bypass valve allows the personnel of the industrial facility to operate the process without the control valve if valve failure or maintenance is reactive, preventive, and predictive. Installing pressure gauges before and after the steam control valve allows for real-time line diagnostics. The importance of proper installation cannot be exaggerated. In many cases, the source of a troublesome startup can be traced to a control valve that is not correctly installed. It is strongly recommended that personnel with an instrumentation background be used to supervise the installation and setup of control valves.
