What Are the Difference Between A Control Valve and An On-off Valve

The difference between control valves and On-off Valves

A control valve is a valve that can control the flow of fluid. It can control the speed and pressure of the fluid through the pipeline by adjusting its opening. Regulating valves usually have a spool, the spool can be rotated or moved up and down to control the opening of the valve. The opening of the valve can be controlled manually or through an automatic control system.

The main function of a control valve is to maintain a constant velocity and pressure of fluid through a pipeline. It is usually used in occasions that need to control the flow precisely, such as chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing industries. The advantage of regulating valves is that they can achieve high-precision flow control. The disadvantage is that they are more costly and require delicate maintenance and upkeep.

On-off Valve is a kind of valve with only two states (open or closed). Its main function is to control the fluid on and off, usually used in applications that require frequent switching. On-off Valve usually has a valve body and a valve cover, the valve cover can be manually or through an electric or pneumatic control system to control the valve on and off.

The major advantages of on-off valves are simple and low cost, so it is suitable for most occasions. Its disadvantage is that it can not achieve precise flow control, if you need to control the flow, you need to cooperate with other equipment to realize it.

Ⅲ.The difference between control valves and On-off Valves

1.Different signals:

On-off Valves have a fixed switching signal, and control valves have variable control signals. For the valve action, On-off Valve is a command, that the valve is fully open (fully closed) or limited openness, the control valve is a command to achieve the command requirements of the open (closed) degree and can be adjusted continuously!

2. Different functions:

Control valves are used to accurately control the flow and pressure, while the On-off Valve can only control the fluid on and off.

3. Different design:

Control valves usually have a spool, the spool can be rotated or moved up and down to control the speed and pressure of the fluid through the pipeline. While the On-off Valve usually has only a valve body and a valve cover, the valve cover can be manually or through an electric or pneumatic control system to control the valve switch. On-off Valves use a flat, spherical, wedge-shaped spool, regulating valves more curved (fungus head) spool or cage.

4. Different costs:

The structure of the control valve is more complex than the On-off Valve, requiring higher technology and manufacturing costs, so the cost is higher.

5. Different flow characteristics:

On/Off valves are of the fast-open/fast-closed type, while control valves are of specific flow characteristics, such as linear, equal percentage, etc.
